Memory Cafés are a safe place where people with a dementia diagnosis and their caregivers can learn about community resources, connect with others on a similar journey and enjoy time together in a relaxed atmosphere.  The Memory Café model was developed in the Netherlands in 1997. The concept has since taken root in the United Kingdom, and, in recent years, has begun blossoming in the United States.  Cafés are starting to grow in the Twin Cities area and will soon begin here in Washington County. FamilyMeans hosts Memory Cafés in several familiar venues.

While each café adapts itself to its location and participants, there are several things all of them have in common:

  • The café is inclusive and welcoming.
  • People experience a sense of belonging and normalcy.
  • Dementia is spoken about openly. Information is shared, peer support develops, learning happens.
  • Participants enjoy themselves. There is an informal feeling and people connect with others in a community setting.

Since everyone attending a Memory Café has a personal understanding of dementia, its a great way to socialize and be reassured that you’re not in this alone.

Relax, unwind, and have some fun! There’s something for caregivers and their loved ones at a Memory Café — good conversations and resource sharing will keep everyone connected and help you relax.
